- Never leave children, adults, or pets in a parked vehicle, even for a short time.
- If your home is not air conditioned, seek relief at the home of a family member, friend, or neighbor, or visit a public cooling location.
- Take cool showers or baths to lower your body temperature.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
- Limit use of ovens and other heat-producing appliances.
- If outdoors, seek shade and wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor work or exercise during the hottest part of the day whenever possible.
- Check on older adults, family members, neighbors, and anyone who may be vulnerable to the heat.
- Know the signs of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
- Protect your pets by providing plenty of fresh, cool water and shaded areas. Remember that asphalt and pavement can become hot enough to burn paws.
- If you suspect someone is suffering from heat stroke, call 9-1-1 immediately. Move the person to a cooler location and begin cooling them while waiting for emergency responders.
