[CANCELED] Lead Poisoning Awareness

This presentation will explain:

• What is lead poisoning
• How is it diagnosed
• Symptoms
• Treatment

There will also be different images for those to guess what has lead in it with an explanation on that back of each image.  Lastly, it tells how to protect your child from lead poisoning with simple tasks such as washing your child’s hands and toys, eating a diet that can help lower lead levels, cleaning dusty surfaces and running cold water.

There will also be a walk through set up where individuals can walk through and push explanation buttons and pet “Dusty” and see first hand how easy it is to have lead on your child’s hands and to ingest.

Helen Shropshire is a Registered Nurse at Middlesex County Office of Health Services. She holds a BS in Nursing from The College of New Jersey. Working within the guidelines of the Childhood Lead Prevention Program of New Jersey, she provides case management of children with elevated blood lead levels.  Her responsibilities include: making home visits to interview client families about their health, nutrition and environment, providing education on sources of lead exposure and its physiological effects on children, surveying surroundings and circumstances to investigate potential causes of lead, teaching strategies to reduce risks of lead poisoning.  Helen is a member of the New Jersey Interagency Task Force on the Prevention of Lead Poisoning and the Central Jersey Lead Coalition.  She performs lead screenings at Middlesex County Child Health Services clinic in New Brunswick for uninsured or underinsured clients.  She also does community outreach to promote the Office of Health Services Childhood Lead Prevention Program.   
 
Anna Munn is a Registered Nurse who works for the Middlesex County Office of Health Services. She has worked in Public Health in various capacities for over 15 years. She earned an Associate of Science degree in Nursing from Excelsior College in Albany, N. Y.  As a Public Health Nurse Lead Case manager Anna makes home visits to conduct child lead poisoning investigations and to provide education and guidance to the families. Nutrition, sources of potential lead exposure and healthy home education is provided by Public Health Lead Nurses. Anna also collaborates with Middlesex County Office of Health Services Environmental Inspectors, as a team effort, in detecting sources of lead in the home and in the child’s environment. Communication with and education of the child’s pediatrician, eg. regarding monitoring lead cases for timely repeat testing, are also part of case management responsibilities. Anna also conducts lead capillary blood screening testing in Acelero Daycares and in the Middlesex County Childhood health clinics in Edison and New Brunswick which targets vulnerable pediatric populations.
